At the Consortium for Ocean Leadership’s recent fall meetings, the Board of Trustees unanimously voted to award Dr. Megan Davis (FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute) and Dr. James Sanders (University of Georgia’s Skidaway Institute of Oceanography) the 2019 Graham B. Shimmield Leadership Award for extraordinary contribution to advancement of the organization and its mission.

Dr. Graham Shimmield was a dear friend, colleague, and long-time COL trustee who served as treasurer from 2013 until his passing in 2016. His leadership and thoughtful guidance were essential to navigating the challenges of the time. To honor his memory and his generous contributions, the Graham B. Shimmield Leadership Award is made annually to trustees who follow in his footsteps with extraordinary dedication and contribution to the advancement of COL and its mission.

For the first time in its history, two trustees were presented with the award in recognition of their service to COL. During their years on the board, both Dr. Davis and Dr. Sanders exemplified the leadership, dedication, and contribution to the advancement of the consortium, as well as the broader ocean science community, the award recognizes. “Megan’s incredible business acumen has been an incredible asset for COL, and her tireless work goes far beyond what is normally expected of a board member. We owe her a debt of gratitude for her time, dedication, and expertise,” said Dr. Jaqueline Dixon, COL board chair (2018-2020).

RADM Jon White, USN (Ret.), president and CEO of COL, stated, “I greatly appreciate Jim’s financial expertise and selfless willingness to return to the board when the need arose. I applaud his incredible dedication to the success of COL over his long history with the organization. His hard work and insights have our consortium at critical junctures and have contributed significantly to COL’s success.”

Join us in thanking Dr. Davis and Dr. Sanders for the many hours they devoted to advancing COL’s mission to shape the future of ocean science and technology.
