Consortium for Ocean Leadership Board Announces Executive Search
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Chair of the Board of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership Dr. Robert B. Dunbar, announced the formal initiation of a search for the position of President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ocean Leadership. The selectee will succeed Dr. Robert B. Gagosian, who has decided to step down after having served as President and CEO since the formation of the organization in 2007.
In announcing the search, Dr. Dunbar said, “Dr. Gagosian was instrumental in helping shape and guide Ocean Leadership as it was created through the merger of the Joint Oceanographic Institutions (JOI) and the Consortium for Ocean Research and Education (CORE). His leadership of this newly formed consortium was critical for establishing, cultivating and solidifying the reputation of the organization as a trusted source of information for policymakers in the nation’s capital. Dr. Gagosian has agreed to remain as President until his successor is identified and will help with the transition of leadership to that individual. He has been a vocal and visible leader in the oceanographic community for decades and while we are sorry to see him step down, we know we can always count on him to share his opinions, expertise and passion with our community.”
Dr. Gagosian commented, “It has truly been a privilege to lead this organization and represent the community, particularly at a time when there has been so much change occurring in our field. However, at this stage in my career I am looking forward to the next chapter of staying engaged with the community in a different role, where I can continue to use my strategic skills such as participation on boards and visiting committees. I am confident that Ocean Leadership will continue to find new ways for our community to address the many challenges facing our oceans and our nation.”
Last October, Ocean Leadership’s Board of Trustees decided to move forward with the formation of a President and CEO Search Committee. The Committee consists of the Board’s Executive Committee as well as additional Ocean Leadership Members and Trustees, with assistance provided by Nonprofit HR, a human resources consulting firm.
The Search Committee will work with Nonprofit HR, as well as with the Ocean Leadership membership, to identify suitable candidates and evaluate referrals and nominations. They will also seek input from Ocean Leadership staff and solicit nominations from the broader ocean science community. A job announcement is expected to be released in the coming month.
“We look forward to Dr. Gagosian’s continued strong leadership throughout this search and transition period, and to the input and involvement of Ocean Leadership employees, Trustees and Members in helping shape the organization’s future,” said Dr. Dunbar.
