Commencing in January 2018, the North Star Group (NSG) will offer a paid communication internship in its Capitol Hill office.
NSG is an Alaska-centric consulting firm that provides strategic advice, advocacy, and research for communities, governments, businesses, and organizations in the U.S. and abroad.
This is a chance to join a team that works on many issues important to the communities of the north. Previous interns have found the work to be a rewarding and educational experience.
The position will focus heavily on the communication aspect of public policy and finding creative ways to disseminate information. Responsibilities will include posting to social media, writing reports and articles, and explaining and communicating issues related to NSG clients’ policy areas of interest such as the Arctic, energy, climate change and environment, Indigenous peoples, Alaska communities, natural resources, economic development, and related subjects.
The position is open to current college students or recent graduates who have a high competency in writing and excellent communication skills. It would be ideal for journalism, communications, or political science majors. A special interest in and knowledge of Alaska and Arctic issues is a plus.
NSG produces The Arctic Report for subscribers who want to stay current on Arctic dialogue and policy development in Washington, DC. The intern will assist with external communications and help with note-taking for hearings, conferences and other business meetings that are a part of the subscription product. The intern will play an important role in informing the people of the north about the issues that affect the north.
Internship assignments will vary but will most definitely include:
• All forms of communiques – memos, reports, letters, emails, proposals, etc.
• Update and coordinate social media program
• Convert technical information for the non-technical reader
• Monitor and communicate current events
NSG’s office is located on Capitol Hill, allowing convenient access to congressional events and placing interns in the center of activity. Alaska ties are a plus, but ALL qualified and motivated individuals are encouraged to apply. This is a paid internship at a negotiated rate.
