Workshops: Submitting a ProposalSubmitting a Workshop ProposalWorkshop proposals must be submitted by researchers affiliated with a U.S. institution. Proposal review occurs biannually after the submission deadlines of October 1 and April 1. Notification of funding can be expected the following by February or August, respectively. Proposal Cover Material1. Workshop Proposal Cover Sheet: A completed cover sheet is required for the proposal. It must include original signatures. 2. Curriculum Vitae: A curriculum vitae (CV) is required for each proponent listed on the cover sheet. The CV should include a summary of other relevant current support and a brief description of prior work involving IODP, OPD, or DSDP. 3. Demographic Information Form: The demographic information form must be completed for each proponent listed on the cover sheet. Demographic information will be used for statistical purposes only and will not be disclosed to reviewers. Proposal ContentsProposals should not exceed 10 pages and should include: 1. Scientific Motivation: The proposal must contain a description of the scientific motivation for the workshop and its relation to the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. 2. Workshop Education and Outreach: In addition to the primary goal of identifying promising new scientific objectives and research opportunities, workshops also provide a good opportunity to help create an ocean science literate society through Education and Outreach (E&O). With this in mind please address the following questions in your proposal:
3. Budget Summary and Budget Justification: Budgets normally should be within $40,000. Proponents are encouraged to seek co-sponsorship of the workshop with other programs. Usual budget items include participant travel to the workshop, salary support for the convener, supplies, printing, advertising, meeting facility costs, and costs associated with producing the report. Steering committee costs will be considered. Please note that, by policy, Ocean Leadership workshop funds cannot cover field trips. 4. List of Participants: The proposal should contain an initial list of proposed sponsored participants with justification. A goal of some workshops is to broaden the community of scientists interested in the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. If your workshop will draw groups who are not traditionally users of IODP data, what plans to do you have to sustain their interest and draw further on their expertise? Do you foresee a mechanism for those participants to broaden the interest of that community further? 5. Travel and Location: The proposal should contain a proposed date and location, with options. Sponsored travel must be consistent with the Ocean Leadership Travel Policy. Ocean Leadership can assist in making arrangements for the meeting place and airline tickets. Workshops are normally held within the United States and travel funds are normally reserved for U.S.-based participants; exceptions can be discussed. 6. Advertising: Workshops must be advertised by in an appropriate trade journal (e.g., EOS, Geotimes, GSA Today, AAPG Explorer). All advertising should acknowledge support of the U.S. Science Support Program associated with the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program managed by Consortium for Ocean Leadership. The notice should state that the workshop is open to all participants. Advertisements must be reviewed by Ocean Leadership prior to placement. PublicationsA final report summarizing workshop motivation, discussions, and recommendations is required within six months following the workshop. The report must contain an executive summary, a list of recommendations, a list of participants, and a synopsis of possible drilling expeditions and strategies. The report should be of moderate length (35 pages) and be delivered as a pdf document. The convener may be requested to also provide a summary article for Ocean Leadership and should consider publishing reports results in scientific newspapers. Questions?Proponents are encouraged to discuss their ideas with the U.S. Science Support Program. Charna Meth, Assistant Director | |
