Dr. Will Sager
Professor, Marine Geology & Geophysics
Texas A&M
On this Expedition:
As the primary scientific investigator for this expedition, my responsibilities are quite broad. The planning for this expedition began a few years ago, and many tasks were involved. We looked at the amount of time we would need for the research, the costs, who needed to be involved and how we wanted to communicate our work out here. We wanted students involved at all levels in this expedition. The teacher at sea and this web site were developed because we want young people to experience research at sea. We also have several undergrad and graduate students working side by side with experienced scientists. We all learn!

About myself:
I am a professor teaching and doing research in oceanography, specifically marine geology and geophysics. My job is to figure out how the ocean floor formed and evolved and I do this with remote sensing with data collected from ships.
For Students:
We know less about the ocean bottom than we do about the Moon or Mars because the sea floor is hidden by ocean water. I have always been fascinated by being able to explore the ocean bottom. On this cruise, for example, we are visiting and mapping places that no one has thoroughly mapped before - and we even get to name some of the places!
