Shari Hilding-Kronforst Marine Geology & Geophysics Texas A&M
On this Expedition: As a part of the geophysics science team, I am a scientist on the geophysics watch, in everyday life - a geochemist who uses marine sediments to study what the oceans and climate “used to be like” millions of years ago so that we can have more detailed information to predict potential future changes in the oceans and climate. I work with several instruments that are used to record information about the ocean floor. When I am not on geophysics watch, I like to workout and catch up on some of my research work.
About myself: Being a geologist and chemist (geochemist) was not my first career, I was a computer consultant (programmer) and accountant for several years before deciding to go back to school for a science degree. For as long as I can remember (my family says it started when I was 3) I’ve always collected rocks. It was my interest in how the different processes and systems on Earth were interconnected that led me to study geochemistry. For Students: Going to sea allows you to meet people with similar interests who are trying to answer questions about Earth processes but yet people from varied backgrounds and expertise on how to answer the questions. This is my fifth time on a research cruise and each time I meet new and interesting people. The earth sciences is an interdisciplinary field, meaning that it takes an understanding of and collaboration with different branches of the sciences to best understand how to understand how processes on our planet work. Each cruise experience brings together biologists, chemists, geologists, oceanographers, physicists, teachers and others to learn from one another.
Sometimes the slightest shift in the way you look at things, a seemingly insignificant change in perspective can alter your life forever. Anonymous | ||||
