Teacher at Sea - Sea90e

JOI (Joint Oceanographic Institutions) Learning

On this Expedition:

As a teacher at sea, I help to find ways that we can share what we do here with students of all ages. We are all learning from this and have new tools/technology to do it. What better place to learn than in the middle of the ocean. If we can capture the essence of this research work here and share in "real time" with students, learning becomes experiencing. OK, books are good, but if we can interact with the web site, send messages back and forth right away, occasionally do a video-conference, and talk whenever we want, then the barriers go away.

It is a thrill to have the chance to work with the scientists, the crew here, and students in several countries that are participating directly in our expedition every day. These three groups are all working together and it is simply a pleasure to be involved with a team like this!

About myself:

I really like teaching, and I like the ocean, so this is a great project for me. My background includes work with computers and network technology, and building this website with the help of students has been a great experience. I have a BS and MS degree, and have continued taking courses; I see learning as a lifelong process, and mostly fun. All right, sometimes it is simply difficult, but that is important too.

For Students:

The sea is an especially awesome place. I was actually born and live in a small town up in the mountains of Colorado. The people there were western pioneers and in some ways, they still are. We live in a time when we can use technology out at sea, but it still is pure and wild and free out here. It is cool to be out on the ocean, and to be with this group of people. In many different ways, for several different reasons, we all want to be here! Yes, even without seeing land for two months. You have to try it sometime; it is an incredible experience!
