Ron Comer
Dredge Consultant
Oceanographic Sampling Systems
On this Expedition:
My role on this expedition is to provide the technical expertise with the dredge process. This work is sometimes at all hours of the day and night, whenever the science team finds a place they want to collect rocks. Although the equipment looks fairly simple, dredging and actually bringing up rocks is not easy. Our dredges, thirty so far on this trip, have been good. We have had some difficult undersea ridges (scarps) and some snags, but have done well.

About myself:
I retired from Scripps Institution of Oceanography after thirty years as a Resident Marine Technician. My BS degree is in Marine Geology, specializing in moorings and geologic sampling. I am also the co-inventor of the glass rock corer. I have been on over 150 voyages at sea, on all of the oceans of the world.
For Students:
I grew up in the desert, so I naturally gravitated to the sea. I have always been interested in geology since I found my first fossil at age eight. A sense of adventure and love of the sea were my motivations for my career.
