On this Expedition:
My role is co-chief for the geophysics science team. I work with Dr. Will Sager so that we have 24 hour coverage for the scientific survey on this expedition. We maintain detailed logs for all the instrumentation and do some immediate bathymetric maps so that we can identify new features and locate dredge sites. We have teams to work on deck anytime of the day or night to move equipment or dredge. We also have safety drills and when the schedule allows, we have science meetings on different topics. When I have time off-watch, I work on research papers or have time on deck too!

About myself:
I'm a PhD Candidate and have been working with Dr. Will Sager for the past five years. Hopefully, I will finish my degree plan soon. I was born and grew up in Japan, and came to the States when I was 23 years old. Since then, the air of "freedom" in the States (and Texas) re-indoctrinated me...
For Students:
Most of my interests are about stating hypotheses about geophysical problems, and then solving these global problems using quantitative techniques. It is great to have both a desk on land and to do field work at sea. I love to experience the dynamics among people on the ship and the challenges that occur with the limited supplies available during survey expeditions. It is sometimes hard to express, but my research work is a need that I feel; it is a vital and important part of my life.
I said to my soul, be still
and wait without hope.
For hope would be hope for the wrong thing;
Wait without thought,
for you are not ready for thought.
