James Edward Hayden, Sr.

Second Assistant Engineer

RV Roger Revelle

Scripps Institute of Oceanography

University of California, San Diego (UCSD)

On this Expedition:

On the RV Roger Revelle, my job as Second Engineer includes many areas of responsibility, especially water-making and the fuel systems. The position is classified for a 6000 HP vessel. Since our engines are generators to power electric motors to drive the ship, everyone works with very advanced systems. See the article on the engine area for more detail.

About myself:

I live on an island off the Coast of Maine and am a native of Maine. I have gone to sea for 43 years. I hold a Chief Engineer's license for Steam, Motor, and Gas Turbine Engines of Unlimited Horsepower. I've been married 36 years and have two children. My son is pursuing his Ph.D. in Entomology at Cornell University and my daughter is pursuing her Ph.D. in Anglo Saxon, Norse and Celtic Studies at the University of Cambridge. I've been on every continent, to 141 countries, and in 13 wars, coup d'etats, uprisings and revolutions. I am an avid gardener, and grow many of my plants indoor during winter before the summer growing season but I refuse to grow orchids as orchid addiction is an addiction that can't be kicked. I also write short stories that will only be published after my death.

For Students:

Many of the officers and crew of Merchant Marine ships, such as this one, graduated from the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine as I did. The Merchant Marine is about trade and commerce. It is primarily the shipping of manufactured goods, resources and or people from one place to another. While it has been used in every war that the United States has had, it is really a tool for trade and peace. Indeed, no war the United States has had could have been fought without the Merchant Marine, but that is not the purpose of our profession that merchant seamen are most proud of. We prefer peaceful trade and commerce. If you want to fight there other ways to learn it than at a school for merchant seamen.

As I mentioned in a previous paragraph I've been everywhere and they paid me (well), fed me (well), and gave me a place to sleep. When I go on vacation it is usually for two or more months, at which time I pursue my hobbies and take care of home business that I neglected while I was gone at sea.

You can make more money in other professions, but you can't have as much fun as I do.
