On this Expedition:
As a petrologist / geochemist on this expedition, I am responsible for the petrology day watch. My responsibilities include supervising the sorting and grouping of the collected rocks into categories, and later description of these same samples. We have an international team of scientists from the UK, from the States, from Portugal, from India and from South Africa which constitutes a great working dynamic.
I also work with Rory, the teacher, and some of the online students that participate with the Sea90e web site activities. This includes video-conferencing with students about careers at sea. We are all students, our whole life!

About myself:
I am from Portugal and moved three years ago to Vancouver, Canada to pursue my Ph.D. It is a great opportunity to really get to know a new country. It is interesting to interact with different people and cultures, and to broaden one's horizons. In my free time I like to travel and do outdoor activities related to water and photography.
For Students:
Coming from a country that is bordered mainly by the ocean, and is historically a land of sailors, perhaps the sea is in my blood. There is nothing more fascinating and mysterious than the deep blue sea. Going to sea and pursuing studies related to it are thus part of the human nature in satisfying its' curiosity for the unknown.
