On this Expedition:
On the RV Roger Revelle, the able seamen have several tasks. The first and most important is to assist the captain or mate that is on-watch with reporting any ship traffic that is seen from the bridge. This allows the mates to work on course changes and plotting the current position in the chart room. As with all crew members, able seamen also work to keep the Revelle in top condition while at sea!

About myself:
My job is to stand bridge watch and to report any ship sightings off the starboard (right) or port (left) bow to the mate on watch. This is needed because they can not watch everything while doing navigation or plotting the course on the charts or with the computer. Sometimes the bridge is very busy when we are close to a large harbor. I also help out wherever I am needed for the ship and with the science group.
For Students:
My father was a seaman and I always wanted to do this myself. I like to keep watch and we meet some very interesting people on the science expeditions. We go to all parts of the world. On this trip, I have also collected information working directly with the scientists and the teacher to help my niece with her science project! School is very important.
Here is some more information on going to sea as an able seaman!
