Clemens A. Kessler
Merchant Seaman
RV Roger Revelle
Scripps Institute of Oceanography
University of California, San Diego (UCSD)
On this Expedition:
On the RV Roger Revelle, my job includes several areas of responsibility. The position assists licensed engineers in monitoring and maintaining the air-conditioning/heating, water system, electricity, and general ship machinery. Aboard the Revelle, we have a lot of high technology equipment and it is important for everything to function flawlessly. See the article on the engine area for more details. Everyone in the engine room and the ship overall works together as a team.

About myself:
I like the life aboard a ship. I see my position as both merchant seaman and adventurer. I think that education is very important and have worked in secondary schools as a substitute teacher. My alma mater is the University of California, Santa Cruz. My major was in contemporary European History and American Literature. I have also had a lifetime passion for the sea.
For Students:
Two words in conservation lingo: resource management. If we are going to continue to harvest seafood and raw materials from the oceans, we must understand the importance of preserving the seas for future generations. What better way to do this than to actually experience the beauty and majesty of the sea...
Get out there!
