Third Mate

RV Roger Revelle

On this Expedition:

My work is to pilot the ship, stand watch and navigate in all conditions while at sea. It is an interesting job because the Captain and Mates have full responsibility for the Revelle. The work varies from quiet watches at sea to piloting in crowded waters, as well as supervising operations while we are in port. We maintain a current position log, keep electronic logs and use a full range of computer controls up on the bridge. Since the Revelle is entirely powered by electricity, all of our steering and navigation is integrated. We also have full electronic chart sets and satellite communications. Even with all that, our most important work is to keep a continual visual watch, with the help of the able seamen, and to always look to the safety of the ship and crew.

Each Mate position has different responsibilities. As Third Mate, in addition to the primary work, I am the safety officer for the ship. This means that all of our safety equipment, life boats, survival gear, life jackets and other equipment are also a part of my responsibility. Every week, I inspect all the equipment and we have safety training for both the crew and the science team. Everyone does the training, even if they are off-watch; safety out at sea is everyone's responsibility.

About myself:

On board the Revelle and other ships, I have traveled to Thailand, Papua New Guinea, Taiwan, the Antarctic, Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti... When I was growing up, I always liked being on the water; I sailed on a 37 foot sailboat and then I went on a ship, and thought, this is great, people can go to all these places in the world, and that's their job! I was fortunate that a relative encouraged me to go to the Great Lakes Maritime Academy and get my Mates License. I have worked as an A/B, as a Mate, as well as other work on ships. I love to travel and we get to go to some really exotic places to do scientific research.

For Students:

I think that the ocean is an interesting place. We work on ships, but we also have time back on shore for weeks at a time and get to go on both long and short trips. There are a lot of different jobs on ships and I think it is great that women have as much of a chance here at sea for the Mate or Captains' jobs as men! Almost all the people that come on ships really want to be here, so you meet some interesting people while you travel. What more could a person want?
