Easy Cruising Day: Now in the Southeast Trade Winds.
Posted by: Rory Wilson 11:00 AM Indian Ocean
Good morning! I actually slept in this morning. No, not until 11:00, but I didn't get up at 4:00 am like it has been most days. We dredged once more on the site last night, then around midnight pulled in and started heading further south. The motion is way different today, and I realized why. The wind is coming in from the south, southeast. Even the sky is different, bands of clouds..
They are the trades! And there is this nice long loping-along swell. The day just started out well. The tradewinds north of the equator come mostly from the northeast and here in the south, they come in from the southeast. This is cool. (great sailing breeze!)
Just awhile ago, I posted the Seamount Name contest rules; think this will be fun and some of the science team are already trying to think of names.. I may try to post some of the early ideas if we get some good ones.
And I am almost ready to post the new science challenge question. This one is a bit more difficult. Students need to be really thorough in how they write out their answers and include all the information in this one. I think the trick is that there may be more than one good location and they need to be sure to dredge in a direction that pulls the rocks up theslope so that it fills the bucket instead of just dragging in along the side of a slope.
Well, I had better get back to putting some more links in these pages. One of my favorite students helped me with that suggestion. Enjoy your weekend! | |||
