2:00 PM Indian Ocean

The day after the 4th of July (USA Independence Day). Sunrise: sunrise

It is easy to say that we missed fireworks and festivities last night is some ways. We did have a very good dinner, and chocolate cream pie for dessert, but as I mentioned on the front page, it was still a working day at sea. I think it is important to understand that the science work that takes place at sea requires a real commitment with everyone out here. It is fun, and a lot of work!

So the sunrise today was a great way to start the day, and I updated the Questions page; we had a good question about sharks and our seismic floats. It did help people here appreciate why we don't get to go swimming while on board.

I am heading to the engine room here in awhile. This is an area that is really interesting. The Chief Engineer and I were talking this morning up in the lab about the skills needed now for engines and the power control systems. It is actually amaziing that we run the ship entirely with electric motors, several of them, that are powered by diesel generators. In the next couple of days, we will have some more information up on the People pages.

Actually, the way the day started helped me to keep things in perspective. Nature, holidays, science, work and careers...

So, before I go the the engine room, let me include one quick note: here is a bit of art that was on the side of a watch-stander's logsheet. Cool, huh?
