This month, the JOIDES Resolution concluded Expedition 350 (IBM Rear Arc), the first in a series of three expeditions focused on the Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM) oceanic arc, where the Pacific Plate subducts beneath the Philippine Sea Plate. Led by co-chief scientists Yoshihiko Tamura (JAMSTEC/IFREE) and Cathy Busby (University of California, Santa Barbara), Expedition 350 examined the rear arc area to the west of the subduction zone. The expedition concluded in Yokohama, Japan on May 30. During this port call, more than 100 VIPs, media reporters, scientific colleagues and students toured the vessel. Immediately following the port call, the vessel will embark on Expedition 351 (IBM Arc Origins), the next in the three-part IBM expedition series.
