The third annual Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill and Ecosystem Science Conference took place in Houston, Texas on February 16-19. It was a great success with over 1,000 registrants attending, 230 poster presentations, and 270 oral presentations. In addition to the days of scientific sessions, over a dozen additional associated events took place, including a Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) poster session welcoming the new RFP-IV consortium directors. Again this year, Ocean Leadership sponsored the James D. Watkins Student Award for Excellence in Research. The winners were Lindsay Dornberger and Kristina Deak from the University of South Florida, both of whom embodied the Watkins Award evaluation criteria (scientific merit, research capability, design & style, and knowledge of presenter). The new president and CEO of Ocean Leadership, Sherri Goodman, presented the students with their awards. For more information on the conference proceedings, visit the conference website.
The RFP-V deadline for full proposals, March 13, is coming up soon. Once the full proposals are in, the extensive peer review process will begin with the goal of announcing the awardees later this fall. More information on the full proposal guidelines and the review process can be found on the RFP-V page of the GoMRI website.
Finally, representatives from the GoMRI management team will be attending the Southern Sociological Society’s annual meeting in New Orleans on March 26-29. Look for our GoMRI booth if you plan to attend!
