On April 20th, as part of GoMRI’s partnership with the Smithsonian Ocean Portal, an article was released by Smithsonian Magazine online in recognition of the five year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. This article, entitled Five Things the Gulf Oil Spill Has Taught Us About the Ocean, incorporates a wide range of GoMRI science to inform readers about new ocean science discoveries, including work on ocean currents, invasive species and deep-water sharks. You can read the article here.
The trailer has been released for “Dispatches from the Gulf,” a documentary currently in development by the Screenscope film production company. The documentary will help to tell the story about the scientists involved with the GoMRI program and their research to improve society’s ability to understand, respond to, and mitigate the impacts of petroleum pollution and related stressors of the marine and coastal ecosystems. The documentary will air later this year as a new episode of the award-winning Journey to Planet Earth series.
Finally, plans for the 2016 Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill and Ecosystem Science Conference, February 1-4, 2016 at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel in Tampa, Florida, are well underway. The Call for Sessions will be released in early May and submissions will be accepted through mid-June.
