On July 23, more than 20 teachers participating in the Smithsonian’s Science Education Academies for Teachers program came to the Consortium for Ocean Leadership for an afternoon professional development program. The teachers investigated cores, worked with Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) data sets, and had a live chat with the JOIDES Resolution via Skype. All participants left with a handful of new activities and resources to use in their classrooms. The next workshop will take place in August, and will welcome 20 teachers from Washington, D.C. Public Schools and surrounding districts for three days of professional development that ties IODP science with the Next Generation Science Standards.
