2014 National Ocean Sciences Bowl Award Trips

Each year, the award for the top winning teams at the National Ocean Sciences Bowl Finals Competition is an experiential trip that provides these teams with unique hands-on field and laboratory experience in the marine sciences. The trips expose students to science professionals and career opportunities, while enriching their understanding and stewardship of the ocean. For 2014, the first place team was awarded a trip to Northern New England and the second place team was awarded a trip to the Mid-Atlantic region. These trips were made possible through funding from the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society. For more information on the 2014 award trips, click here.

The International Ocean Discovery Program is liquidating its warehouse of publications from the Deep Sea Drilling Project, the Ocean Drilling Program, and the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program. Academic members of the ocean drilling community may request one or more sets of these serial monographs for university or personal use. This offer covers the Initial Reports of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, the Initial Reports and Scientific Results volumes of the Proceedings of the Ocean Drilling Program, and the Proceedings of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program.

We will process requests in the order received, while supplies last. Some volumes are limited in supply or unavailable, but we will distribute nearly complete sets as a first priority. We will address requests for individual volumes after we fulfill all requests for full sets. To receive a shipping quote, send a request with shipping details to IODP Distribution Specialist Ann Yeager. We require advance payment for shipping. A complete set of the printed books, CD-ROMs, and DVDs weighs approximately 1800 pounds.

Ocean Science Educators’ Retreat 2014

The Ocean Science Educators’ Retreat will host its 2014 meeting September 24-25, 2014 in Savannah, Georgia at the Coastal Georgia Center, hosted by Savannah State University. This year’s theme will focus on curriculum opportunities and challenges, both in the face of declining enrollment and with the broadening scope within colleges, as well as diversity initiatives within ocean science graduate programs. Post-meeting and other materials from the 2012 Retreat can be found on our website here. For more information, contact Amanda Holloway.
