The Hydrographic Services Review Panel (HSRP), a Federal Advisory Committee, will convene on July 29-30, 2008, to consider and deliberate on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Hydrographic Services and matters that affect marine transportation, safe navigation, commercial industries, ocean and coastal stewardship, recreational boating, and ocean policy.

This public meeting will take place at the Sheraton Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, California. All are welcome to attend.

There will be public comment periods during the meeting when you may express your viewpoints to the Panel members and NOAA Leadership.

As part of an elite group of scientists, Lodi native Michael Underwood is making history with a project that is drilling deep into the Earth's core. Discovering the secrets of the core may lead to earthquake forecasts and predictions, and may ultimately save thousands of lives.

In the blue waters off the southeastern coast of Japan, a drilling vessel pushes its drill into the earth's core. The drill bit works non stop, cranking itself past black salt water, pushing deep, deep, deeper layers of sand, clay, rock — and the unknown.

Scientists have drilled closer than ever into an active earthquake zone.

Harold Tobin: We know that there are future magnitude 8 earthquakes coming.

That’s geophysicist Harold Tobin of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He’s chief scientist with the Japanese research vessel called the Chikyu, which drilled 1.4 kilometers, or nearly a mile into the Nankai trough off the coast of Japan.

Geologists Discover New Way of Estimating Size and Frequency of Meteorite Impacts

Scientists have developed a new way of determining the size and frequency of meteorites that have collided with Earth.

Their work shows that the size of the meteorite that likely plummeted to Earth at the time of the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) boundary 65 million years ago was four to six kilometers in diameter. The meteorite was the trigger, scientists believe, for the mass extinction of dinosaurs and other life forms.

The United States has been a world leader in scientific ocean drilling for almost forty years and is poised to maintain its position with the newly refurbished drilling vessel, the JOIDES Resolution.From early success in establishing evidence for plate tectonics, the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program continues to illuminate the frontier of earth science, collecting unique data that would otherwise be inaccessible to researchers. Recent expeditions have revealed vast biological communities living surprisingly deep beneath the ocean floor, evidence for tropical water at the
North Pole 55 million years ago, and vast mineral deposits at mid-ocean ridges.

Antarctic Geological Drilling (ANDRILL) is a multinational collaboration of more than 200 scientists, students, and educators from five nations (Germany, Italy, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States) to recover stratigraphic records from the Antarctic margin. ANDRILL’s integrated science approach will use drilling and multi-proxy core analysis combined with geophysical surveys and numerical modeling to address the Cenozoic history of Antarctic climate and ice sheets, the evolution of polar biota, Antarctic plate motions, and Antarctica’s role in the evolution of Earth’s ocean-climate system. New research to test global ice volume approximately 41.6 million years ago shows that ice caps at this time, if they existed at all, would have been small and easily accommodated on Antarctica.

Summary

Results of scientific drilling during the last fifteen years, coupled with the advent of new drilling technologies, provide the impetus for reassessing the strategies for understanding global sea-level change and its impact on the stratigraphic record. The principal objectives of sea-level research are identified as:

• Determining the pattern of global sea-level change (eustasy) through Earth history and identifying and quantifying the mechanisms responsible for eustatic change through geological time. Determination of eustatic timing, amplitudes and rates are essential prerequisites to assessing mechanisms, as is incorporation of results derived from proxy records.
