Oct. 22, 2007 Update on the JOIDES Resolution

A message from Steve Bohlen:

I have just returned from
Singapore where, along with Bill Ball (SODV Program Director), Peggy
Delaney (Chair of the Program Advisory Committee) and several NSF
leaders, I was having a careful look at progress on the refit of the JOIDES Resolution.

Pictures speak louder than words, and I direct you to the ship conversion Web site
for a series of pictures taken over time from the drill floor of the
forward section of the ship. The pictures show demolition and
rebuilding of the ship - a huge amount of work.

Ship Conversion

Conversion Design

Four Conversion Design Teams (CDTs) have been established
to design the Science Facilities, the Science Support Areas,
the Drilling and Coring Systems, and the Information Technology
(IT) systems. The objective of these teams is to specify the
final design requirements for the onboard facilities and to
develop the science equipment priorities and procurement plan.

Ship Conversion

Status

There have been great efforts by NSF and the Ocean Leadership Alliance to keep the SODV project moving forward, despite severe cost pressures. Purchase of new science equipment is nearly complete, refurbishment of some existing equipment continues, and land based testing and integration has begun. Many of ship and drilling service life extension projects have been completed and others are continuing. The drilling equipment including derrick were removed from the ship to be refurbished for reinstallation. A conversion contract for construction and integration of the improved science facility has been awarded to a Singapore shipyard with operations to begin again in November 2008.

Ship Conversion

Plan

This SODV Project Execution Plan (PEP) documents the approach to design, develop and convert an existing drill ship to support the IODP, which is the successor to the very successful ODP.

The PEP is viewed as a living document and will be updated as this MREFC project reaches critical milestones, or when external factors, such as final decisions on each fiscal year’s federal budget, materialize.
