Sue Cook joined CORE in 2004 as Education Director following a 3 ½ year rotation as an Associate Program Director at the National Science Foundation in the Integrative Programs section of the Division of Ocean Sciences with primary responsibility for the COSEE initiative. Prior to her NSF assignment, Dr. Cook was a Senior Scientist in the Division of Marine Sciences at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution in Ft. Pierce, FL and served for 7 years as Director of Education for HBOI’s J. Seward Johnson Marine Education and Conference Center. In 1983 Dr. Cook shifted from a research career in marine science into ocean education with her appointment as Education Director and later Assistant Director (in charge of Education) at the Bermuda Biological Station for Research (now the Bermuda Institute for Ocean Science).

Prior to her 17 years of primarily educational work, Dr. Cook held faculty and research appointments at UCLA and Ohio State University. Her academic credentials include a Bunting Institute Postdoctoral Fellowship from Radcliffe College of Harvard University, a Ph.D. from Duke University in zoology/marine biology and a B.S. in Biology from Tulane University. She currently serves as the Vice Chair for the Marine Technology Society’s Education Committee, is a member of the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography’s Informal Education Subcommittee and has recently become ASLO’s representative for COPUS (the Coalition on the Public Understanding of Science) in Washington DC. Sue and her husband Clay enjoy drinking fine wine and hiking through northern Virginia and Florida whenever they are both in the same state at the same time.
