Email: epowell@oceanleadership.org

Emily Powell recently joined Consortium for Ocean Leadership, Joint Oceanographic Institutions (JOI) Division as program associate for the U.S. Science Support Program in October 2007. As program associate, she provides overall support to the program including managing the contact database, maintaining records, updating the website, and acting as a liaison to the advisory committee (among many other duties). Emily comes to Ocean Leadership from SRI International where she conducted environmental analyses of federal activities and assisted in the development of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents.

Originally from the farmlands of the greater Philadelphia area, Emily earned a B.S from the University of Delaware in environmental science, specializing in biology and wildlife conservation, with a particular interest in sea turtle biology. While earning her undergraduate degree, Emily spent most of her spare time working in the Philadelphia Zoo’s Education Department, taking care of some 70 species of reptiles and amphibians and teaching the youngsters that snakes are cool! She also traveled to Costa Rica to study the diversity of the country's reptiles and promote conservation. Post graduation, Emily did field studies of sea turtles in the St. Joseph’s Bay, FL and the Gulf of Mexico. After one too many hurricanes, she moved to Washington D.C. to do biological assessments and wildlife management for a small environmental non-profit organization. She still hopes to make it back to school someday to study sea turtles and marine biology once again.
