Resources for Scientists

Ocean Leadership Communications and Public Affairs staff supplies useful information to researchers engaging in public outreach. Here we offer presentations, videos, podcasts and other resources that may prove helpful when dealing with the media, writing for the public, or conveying information through lectures. We also provide you with interesting insights into the science world through items we collect across the web, from our colleagues and our international partners.

Interacting with the media:

We have prepared a media awareness training guide providing strategic tips for better communicating with science journalists. To download the guide, point your browser here.  Also download Matthew Nisbet and Chris Mooney's article published in Science entitled Framing Science; this piece pairs with the above presentation by discussing how scientists can take control over the messages they convey to the media -- available here.

The American Geophysical Union (AGU) offers a guide entitled, "You and the Media: A researcher's guide to dealing successfully with the media." Download it here.

The University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism hosted a "Science Communications and News Media" workshop in 2005. They provide useful tips, but also interesting commentary on bridging the gap between researchers and journalists. Visit the website.
