In response to attacks on earth sciences and geosciences in both appropriating (H.R.2578) and authorizing (H.R.1806) bills, former military and national security leaders urged Congress to protect NSF Geosciences and NASA Earth science programs.
Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard leaders highlighted geosciences as effecting everyday Americans every day. Voicing concern about consequences of reduced funding, they focused on the benefits of this research beyond the societal and economic benefits to include national security. Weather forecasts allow for extreme event preparation, protecting people and properties. Reliable data on changes in weather patterns, ice cover, or land shifts is essential to risk management and response, and directly links to food, water, energy, economic, and ultimately national security.
