Shell Oil Company is an affiliate of the Royal Dutch Shell plc, a global group of energy and petrochemical companies with operations in more than 70 countries. In the U.S., Shell operates in 50 states and employs more than 20,000 people working to help tackle the challenges of the new energy future.

Shell is no stranger to the priorities and focus of COL. Over the last two years, Dr. Ruth Perry, Marine and Regulatory Specialist at Shell and Shell’s COL member representative, has served on COL’s Industry Forum Advisory Committee to facilitate framing the forum in a manner that supports robust, constructive, and outcomes-focused discussion on pressing science questions at the intersection of ocean research, industry, and stewardship.

“Shell very much appreciates COL’s multi-stakeholder approach to looking at the future of ocean science and technology needs,” Perry said. “Its role as a balanced advocate and convener of the broad ocean science community is important, and with this membership, Shell has the opportunity to collaborate more broadly with the COL members and the stakeholders COL convenes in the areas of ocean research, ocean observations and monitoring, STEM education, and others to advance science- and technology-driven goals. Shell is very excited to be joining COL at this important time.”

Shell is invested in improving sustainability, advancing science and technology, and providing access to STEM education. After helping launch Louisiana’s first Oyster Shell Recycling Program (the largest such effort in the country), employees helped bag recycled oysters collected from local restaurants to build an oyster reef, which will help reduce erosion, mitigate storm impacts, and provide habitat to recruit larval oysters. Shell supports a variety of STEM educational initiatives that improve student performance, encourage diversity and benefit our nation’s future competitiveness. For example, Shell ‘s Energize your Future initiative provides free, interactive tools to raise awareness of STEM education. Information about the program and the student activities (with teacher guides) can be found here.
