Scientists![]() All New Video Clip -- Beth Orcutt and Geomicrobiology on the Juan de FucaOcean Leadership's goals include developing a geoscience literate society and creating future generations of science leaders. These goals can only be accomplished through strong and on-going partnerships between scientists and educators. Deep Earth Academy facilitates a wide range of opportunities, from reviewing classroom activities for accuracy to bringing educators on board your science expedition. We encourage you to become involved! The following resources, pages and links will facilitate your role as a scientist contributing to the vision of Deep Earth Academy and Ocean Leadership. Getting Started - A Guide for Participation Getting started on an education pathway, but don’t know where to begin? Does education mean you have to work with children? Got an idea but don’t really know what to do with it? We recommend EPO: Education and Public Outreach, A Guide for Scientists, published by The Oceanography Society and the Centers for Ocean Science Education Excellence.
Need assistance with an education plan for Criterion 2 – Broader Impacts for a scientific ocean drilling proposal? Or thinking about integrating education during an expedition? Deep Earth Academy can facilitate, coordinate, or match you with appropriate partners and/or audiences. Contact Leslie Peart or Sharon Cooper for more information. Getting Involved - Current Opportunities Ocean Leadership and Deep Earth Academy are currently seeking scientists to participate in several established programs. You can… • Volunteer to review or field-test curricular materials for publication. • Write or contribute curricular materials for publication. Read the latest contribution, a guided discussion called "A Tale of Two Teeth" by Al Hine. • Nominate yourself as or host a Distinguished Lecturer. Or volunteer to give other guest lectures. Unique opportunities exist to present science to the public, educators, and students. Learn how Dr. David Smith wowed his audience at the Marian Koshland Science Museum. • Participate in Deep Earth Academy’s Ask A Scientist web page. • Mentor a Teacher at Sea. See how Dr. Will Sager is sharing his science with educators and students through his work on the Sea90e interactive website with middle school science teacher, Rory Wilson. • Sponsor a classroom or museum group during an expedition or participate in ship-to-shore communications to school and museum groups. See: Suzanne O’Connell’s contributions to the Science Museum of Minnesota’s Science buzz website, and Gerry Itturino’s ODP in the Classroom Manus Basin, Leg 193 Journal for examples. • Teach a School of Rock at sea, at a repository, or on your own campus. OR visit an elementary school near you. See Mark Leckie working with students in Lebanon, Tennessee. | |
