Science happens all around you! Everywhere you go and everything you see can be described by science in some way. Have you ever wondered what an ocean drilling scientist actually does? Well, now’s your chance! Here are some fun activities to get you started exploring!

Bubba the Driller
Joe “Bubba” Attryde has had an exciting career as a driller, a tool pusher, and a core tech. Without him, scientists on the JOIDES Resolution wouldn’t have an samples to look at. Come along and meet Bubba on our NEW Bubba's Tour Game!

Multimedia
You can learn all about ocean drilling science by reading and watching the School of Rock Video Q & A. See big waves, find out how much food it takes to feed the crew, and lots more. Got a question? The answers can be found right here.

How do you study the Earth's crust below the ocean? Dr. Suzanne O’Connell is a geology professor who sailed the JOIDES Resolution during Expedition 312. She was able to see firsthand and participate in this amazing exploration that sampled parts of the oceanic crust no one had ever seen before! She took pictures and wrote about it for all of us back home. Take a look to see what it’s really like to live and learn at sea!

You can read more about the JOIDES Resolution, its exciting discoveries, and life on board in Science News for Kids. Check it out!

Activities to try at home!
Try Continents and Currents to see how the movement of the continents has caused changes in the oceans. This colorful activity would be fun to do right in your very own kitchen!

When scientists on the JOIDES Resolution need protection because of stormy weather, they wear a “Gumby” Suit for survival. Our “Gumby” suits are big, rubber, orange suits that are designed to keep us from freezing in case someone fell into cold water.

The JOIDES Resolution is a seagoing home to people from many different backgrounds. They may come from different places round the world, but they all have one thing in common. They LOVE Earth and ocean science! It’s a Small World ( download 1.8MB) shows that we really are closer than we think. Grab your atlas and check it out!
