Standard D: Earth and Space Science
Standard G: History and Nature of Science

Keywords: physical properties, marine sediments, geochemistry, downhole logging,

Participants will learn about the physical properties of marine sediments - how they are measured, how they depend on porosity and the minerals that make up the sediment, and how scientists interpret them. Students will also learn how downhole logging provides physical properties and geochemical data directly from the borehole itself. Examples and activities are based on scientific drilling expeditions from around Antarctica; students will find out how physical properties can tell us about the history of the great ice sheets on Antarctica.
