It's Sedimentary, My Dear Watson - Activity of the Month: September 2008 Files
Audience: Grades 5-8 National Science Education Content Standards: Standard A: Science as Inquiry Standard B: Physical Science Standard C: Life Science Standard D: Earth and Space Science Standard E: Science and Technology Keywords: sediments, microfossils, Google Earth, core samples, In this introductory activity, students analyze core sample data to identify sediment composition along the mid-Atlantic Ridge. During this process they map localities using latitude and longitude, locate and access core sample images on-line and from Google Earth to make their own qualitative observations, and analyze then plot sediment data. Class members then combine their findings to gain a better understanding of the types of sediments that make up the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This activity is adapted from the undergraduate lesson Inquiry into Sediment Cores. How did you like this activity?
